The power to preserve the future

About LyoWave

A spinout of Purdue's LyoHUB, bringing RF-assisted freeze-drying and thawing from the lab to pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Our origin

It started with a shoebox-sized prototype

In 2016, Purdue faculty members Alina Alexeenko and Dimitrios Peroulis began asking whether microwave technology could help with pharmaceutical supply shortages.

Alina, a LyoHUB co-founder, knew freeze-drying extends shelf life from days to years, but the process is slow, inefficient, and expensive. Dimitrios, an electrical engineer researching RF communications, built a microwave heating prototype the size of a shoebox from lab equipment and hardware store parts.

In January 2023, they founded LyoWave with Drew Strongrich and Ahmad Darwish to bring the technology to market. Drew, an aerospace engineer and former LyoHUB research scientist, had spent more than a decade developing process analytical technologies for freeze-drying, including wireless sensors and closed-loop control methods. Ahmad, an RF scientist at Purdue's School of Electrical Engineering, brought deep expertise in antennas, RF components, and electromagnetic modeling.
